Silybum marianum, also known as milk thistle, is an annual or biennial plant of the Asteraceae family, originally a native of Southern Europe through to Asia, and now found throughout the world. Standarized Milk Thistle Extract, Silybin, contains a mixture of flavonolignans such as silibinin, isosilibinin, silicristin, silidianin and others, and is used most often for liver disorders, including liver damage caused by chemicals or alcohol, amanita phalloides mushroom poisoning, jaundice, chronic inflammatory liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, chronic hepatitis, viral hepatitis and liver cancer. Milk Thistle Extract Silybins is also a remedy for loss of appetite, heartburn (dyspepsia) and gallbladder complaints. Other uses include: diabetes, hangover, diseases of the spleen, prostate cancer, malaria, depression, balancing cholesterol levels, uterine complaints, increasing breast milk flow, allergy symptoms, and starting menstrual flow.
